I'm hard to please.  
As the daughter of a hair stylist I was able to try any new style that came to Tiger Beat Magazine.  The Dorothy Hamil cut vs the Olivia Newton John cut?  Not all of these hair styles looked good on the face God gave me.  Now, far from my hometown and tried and true stylists, I have found my Portland stylist.  Thank you Yelp.
Alan is that rare and wonderful stylist that takes what you say you want, is honest about what he thinks would look good on you, and adds years of knowledge to creates a true look.  He communicates what he's doing always making my time with him a collaborative event.  My cowlicks have always been a challenge and he had a vision on how they could work in my favor. The cut has worked beautifully. 
He's professional, kind, funny, authentic and hard working.  My guess is Natalie and others in this beautiful salon is also the same way.  I had worked in the Spa industry for 9 years prior to moving to Portland and he pays attention to those caring details that five star spas do.  Try his own label of coffee.  YUM.

I have been to many different hair salons in portland, trying to find the one that cares, spends time with the client and tells the true opinion instead of saying "oh you look so gorgeous" even if you looked like crap...well that is Alan...he will give you his time and honest opinion. sometimes we woman see pics in the magazines, thinking one of them would be the best look for us but lets think about this, we are not the experts, it is the stylist who should know this better than i do. and again that is Alan...
as far as color goes, i pick the toughest color, red, for my hair and it has been since beginning of july when i got my last color and still it looks gorgeous and shiny. and the most important thing is it is still healthy!  so if you are looking for a friendly place where your stylist is knowlegable and honest, Alan is the person to see. Thank you for all the knowledge that you bring to your work, Alan! Your european hair products are very much appreciated:)

Hey Alan, just thought I would give you some love.  Thanks for being who you are and all the pampering you give me.  I love what you do.  All my best to you and your family (especially the little one on the way).

Nurture is a gem. A nugget in the Bowl of Ordinary. Husband and wife, Alan and Natalie M. (and all the staff)  have earned all the stars available...and then some.
Alan has cut my hair for over a year. Since I like to try different hair styles, our mantra has become:  Change is good.  Alan listens to what I'd like to try; we talk over the style and he goes over the process of how he will cut my hair and/or the colour process.  Alan isn't just my hair dresser....he is my teammate. We are a team!

I was in town for a week and desperately needed a haircut.  Portlanders (or maybe just people who live outside of major metropolitan areas on the east coast) are lucky in that even great haircuts are cheap cheap cheap.  My hair was a disaster due to my all-I-could-afford chain-salon haircut that I'd gotten back home, and all I wanted Alan to do was make it look decent.  I wasn't even going for a specific look, I just wanted to be presentable.  And wow, did he make my hair more than just presentable.  He really cares about your hair and will put thought into what will make it look good instead of listening to you talk for 30 seconds and then hacking at it for 10 minutes.  He took his time and I felt like I was sitting there for a while, and that's a good thing.  Nurture also gets huge props for giving me an appointment an hour and a half after I called instead of, like, a month and a half.  Awesome.
Update 6/26/08: It's been over 2 months and I still don't need a haircut.  Just sayin'.

I love my Alan, I always look forward to my hair appointment.  He takes his time to do a good job and always gives it that spa experience (scalp massage, aroma therapy, flax seed heating pads, etc...).  Thank you Nurture Salon

Thanks for the tip.  Alan did a wonderful job and was a pleasurable experience.  Very inviting and comfortable setting.  I was able to work on my laptop, via their wireless and enjoy the pampering.

Alan is the best!  I went in and told him. "i'm bringing the Jennifer Aniston back baby!" and he really captured her hair in the first seasons of Friends.  Now, where's my Brad?

Just arrived home from another visit to Portland and pre-booked appointment with Alan before departure.  Repeat Success.  While in town to visit my boyfriends parents we both found ourselves in need of hair cuts.  What a great Salon!  Very welcoming!  Alan was my stylist and he does such an amazing job.  He takes his time with your hair and takes care of every strand!  He also gets a great understanding of what you want before he does anything!  It is nice to have a hair dresser that first tries to understand what you want!.  Alan also did my boyfriend's hair....and this boy is very very picky about his hair.  Alan is awesome and so is Nurture.

Was able to see Alan again while in town on business.  Continually great service and value.  Thanks again.  I received a great cut and retouch from Alan while on business in Portland.

Went to go see Alan owner/stylist of Nurture didn't have much hope.  The stylist I had been going to for years, whom I loved, couldn't get the color right in my hair since I wanted to go from blonde to a complimentary shade of red for my skin tone.  Easier said than done I guess.  Anyway, went to Alan and he gave me exactly what I was looking for, I was really surprised that he was able to get it right on the first try because my old stylist told me it couldn't be done!  Not only that, but the cut lays perfectly.  This is the best my hair has looked in years, and I'm a pretty picky person. Alan rocks!!

The folks at Nurture know how to take care of my hair needs, but provide nourishment to my body, mind and spirit. I recommend any of the stylists depending on what you are able to afford, but my guy is Alan Mandarano. I have for many years seen a barber every two weeks and kept my hair super short. Alan and Natalie (his wife and Nurture founder) convinced me to let it grow and the feedback from family and friends is that they like my hair longer. More importantly, I like it longer too and now can go almost a month without cutting it. The space is colorful and creative. They support local artists by allowing them to display their work on their walls. They also have an amazing selection of hair care products for any budget or hair type. Finally, every visit reminds me of the importance of humor and fun in life. If your searching for an updated, fresh look or just a new stylist, check out Alan.

Had the best experience with hair colorist and stylist - Alan Mandarano. Services last longer than any other stylist I have had in the past. Italian color and European styling. Fun and Positive environment.

Super friendly staff and Stylist. I have gone through a string of hair stylists in the last couple years and none of them stuck. I have super curly hair that most hair dressers find to be challenging to say the least. After reading so many wonderful reviews, I decided to check Alan out for myself. When I called to make an appointment I was told that Alan loves cutting curly hair and is extremely talented at it. I enjoyed my entire experience. From the head massage when shampooing and conditioning my hair, to the atmosphere, friedly staff, and conversation, Alan exceeded my expectations. My hair has a really great vertical shape now which makes it so much more manageable. He asked that I call in a couple of days to let him know how I was liking it but instead of calling I just decided I would let the stars speak for themselves. Thanks Alan

Alan Mandarano, a stylist @ Nurture salon has done wonders for my hair. Wanting a change, I booked an appointment with Alan, based on other reviews I had come across. He put me at ease straight away and the results were fabulous (cut & color). Thanks to all that recommended Alan, he sure was a good fit for me.

Alan Mandarano, a talented colorist & stylist at Nurture Salon has a private room where he performs his services. He is trained in European techniques and is very knowledgeable and informative about each process he executes. I felt extremely comfortable and well taken care of. I received the best cut and color of my life on my first visit and I will be seeing Alan for the rest of my hair coloring days. The cutting techniques that he uses are tailored to each individual and I must say I, and my co-workers, were blown away at the movement in my hair after the service. Thank you Alan for educating me on my hair care needs. Oh yeah, the products that he has for sell are all from Milan, Italy and are "The Best", my hair has never felt so healthy. I could go on and on..............friendly salon, great atmosphere, excellent hairdresser.
