Experience
As with life, the more hours we devote to a craft the more proficient we become. Setting off on this life as a Hair Designer in 2005 I have found shaping hair as rewarding as coloring. Coloring definitely was the draw to this field from the beginning but luck would find me in a two day hands on class with a talented British ambassador of a condensed form of hair cutting. I had the lighbulb moment, I see it in 3D space now and essentially see the head as an octagon. Each cut is tailored to the individual as your unique head shape is used to create movement and focal points. This along with tension control is the heart of a good haircut and style that's easily reproduced at home.
Advanced Techniques
Structure is the name of the game when it comes to shaping hair. Having been mentored from the beginning in "The Method" a Condensed Cutting Technique also referred to as Volumetrix I quickly had the lightbulb moment where cutting became a creative outlet and more like sculpture, seeing things in 3D. Of course once structure is established, intentional Destruction can occur.

Working out of the Nurture Salon located in Sellwood Oregon, Alan Mandarano is a globally-educated hair designer and provides a range of hair services to clients in the greater Portland area including Milwaukie, Lake Oswego, Happy Valley and Beaverton. Specializing in natural, non-toxic and organic hair services, Alan has been working in the industry since 2005 and continues his education each year.
